Challenging Islamophobia
As a term 'Islamophobia' refers to anti-Muslim prejudice and racism. Islamophobia is based upon an unfounded or exaggerated hostility towards Islam and Muslims. It may be directed against individuals or groups because of their actual or perceived religious background or identification. Islamophobia results in discrimination and harassment, and the exclusion of individuals or groups from areas of social, economic and political life.
Islamophobia is perhaps the most misunderstood prejudice today.
- A 2007 article in Journal of Sociology defined Islamophobia as anti-Muslim racism and a continuation of anti-Asian and Anti-Arab racism.
- According to The British Social Attitudes Survey 2010, around a fifth of those surveyed responded negatively to just Muslims. (Telegraph 11 Jan 2010)
- "Islamophobia…is Britain's last remaining socially respectable form of bigotry, and we should be ashamed of ourselves for it." Peter Oborne, Daily Mail
